METAIRIE, La. (BRPROUD) — There was almost a “sky is falling” mindset surrounding the Saints’ offense following their loss to the Buccaneers. That mindset has now shifted to a “keep building” mindset after a 34-0 win last Sunday over the Patriots.
The Saints say there were plenty of missed opportunities and there were too many times when they got behind the chains early in their win over the Patriots.
The Saints had 12 penalties in the game, the majority of them pre-snap penalties that came on motion plays, something the team incorporated more of into the game plan. The Saints say cleaning things up is an emphasis this week.
“You definitely want to want to clean everything up though the false start penalties, one of them on me, like that’s stuff that we got to clean up,” Foster Moreau, Saints tight end, said. “It’s things that could really hurt you down the line because, in the biggest of games, you don’t get those opportunities back. We got to clean stuff up like that. We won by 34 points but in no way, shape, or form was that a Super Bowl-winning performance.”
“We got so much that we can do better,” Alvin Kamara, Saints running back, said. “I mean, there’s still pre-snap penalties. There’s still some things that, you know, some busts in the running game, some busts in the pass game. It’s like some of those things, if we clean them up, then we talk about like big wins. The details matter, you know what I’m saying? So just focusing on the details… trying to clean up some of those things to put ourselves in a better position to win.”
New Orleans also said the offense needs to be better at starting strong and not needing a Tyrann Mathieu pick-six to get them going as they did against New England.
