BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Southern faced off against the Texas Southern Tigers at A.W. Mumford Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Jaguars came away with a 23-17 win over Texas Southern in overtime.
Texas Southern got on the board first as kicker Gustavo Romero made a 21-yard field goal to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead with 11:29 left in the second quarter.
Southern was able to quickly answer as running back Kendric Rhymes scored on a 69-yard touchdown to give the Jaguars a 7-3 lead with 10:39 left in the second quarter.
The Tigers re-took the lead, 10-7, with 2:17 remaining in the second quarter. Running back Jacorey Howard scored on a 10-yard rushing touchdown.
Texas Southern extended their lead to 10 after quarterback Jace Wilson rushed it in for a 10-yard touchdown. The Tigers took a 17-7 lead with 9:51 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Southern’s defense was able to come up big as defensive tackle Ckelby Givens picked up a fumble by Texas Southern and took it to the house to cut into the Tigers lead, 17-14, with 5:50 left in the fourth quarter.
The Jaguars tied up the score at 17. Kicker Joshua Griffin made a 54-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
Texas Southern got the ball first in overtime and were not able to convert on a 46-yard field goal. The Jaguars completed the comeback as Rhymes scored the game-winning touchdown.
With the win, Southern moves to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
Southern will be back in action in week 10 against Alcorn State in a pivotal SWAC West matchup on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 2 p.m.
