LORMAN, Miss. (BRPROUD) — The Southern University Jaguars took on the Alcorn State Braves at Spinks-Casem Stadium on Saturday. The Jaguars fell to Alcorn State 44-21.
In the first quarter, Southern made it first on the board with a touchdown play by running back Kendric Rhymes with less than 10 minutes left. Alcorn kicker Noah Kiani made the point after attempt, making the score 7-3.
The Braves took the lead with 3:11 remaining in the first quarter as quarterback Aaron Allen connected with wide receiver Monterio Hunt for a 35-yard touchdown to put the score at 10-7.
Alcorn State extended their lead with 2:54 left to go in the first quarter as defensive lineman Keenan Leachman picked up a fumble and took it to the house, making the score 17-7. The Braves were able to take advantage of another turnover by Southern.
Alcorn State running back Malik Rodgers scored an eight-yard rushing touchdown to give the Braves a 24-7 lead with 18 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The Braves continued to build to their lead as Allen connected with tight end Tavarious Griffin for a 52-yard touchdown to put the score at 31-7.
The Jaguars were able to stop a 31-0 scoring run by Alcorn State as quarterback Harold Blood found wide receiver Chandler Whitfield for a 38-yard touchdown with 2:53 to go in the second quarter. Southern cut into Alcorn State’s lead, 31-14.
The Braves tacked on to their lead as Kiani made a 19-yard field goal to make the score, 34-14. Alcorn State’s defense struck again as Blood’s pass was intercepted. Leachman returned it to the house as the Braves took a 41-14 lead with 7:12 left in the third quarter.
Blood found wide receiver Ashton Terrell for a 24-yard touchdown to cut into the Braves lead, 41-21. Kiani made a 37-yard field goal to give Alcorn State a 44-21 lead in the fourth quarter.
With the loss, Southern moves to 5-4 overall on the season and 4-2 in conference play.
Southern will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. when they take on Prairie View A&M at A.W. Mumford Stadium.
