BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Southern returned home to A.W. Mumford Stadium to take on the Florida A&M Rattlers in week six. The Jaguars fell to Florida A&M at home, 26-19.

Southern got on the board first after running back CJ Russell punched it in for a one-yard touchdown to give the Jaguars a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. Kicker Joshua Griffin missed the extra point.

Florida A&M was able to answer with 7:22 left in the second quarter as running back Jaquez Yant scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown to give the Rattlers a 7-6 lead.

The Jaguars offense was able to respond as quarterback Harold Blood connected with wide receiver Chandler Whitfield for a 72-yard touchdown. Florida A&M blocked Griffin’s extra point and returned it to the house as Southern took a 12-9 lead with 2:50 remaining in the second quarter.

The back-and-forth battle continued as Florida A&M quarterback Jeremy Moussa found tight end Koby Gross for a three-yard score as the Rattlers took a 16-12 lead in the final seconds of the second quarter.

Russell rushed in for his second touchdown of the game as the Jaguars were able to re-take the lead, 19-16, with 11:40 remaining in the fourth quarter. Florida A&M was able to tie up the game at 19-9 as kicker Michael Smith made a 44-yard field goal with 7:21 left to play.

Florida A&M took the lead late in the fourth quarter as Moussa connected with wide receiver Jamari Gasset for a 12-yard touchdown to give the Rattlers a 26-19 lead.

With the loss, Southern moves to 2-3 overall on the season and 2-1 in conference play.

Southern will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 14 for their homecoming game at A.W. Mumford Stadium against the Lincoln University Oaklanders at 4 p.m.
