BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Southern University hosted Prairie View A&M at A.W. Mumford Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Jaguars fell to the Panthers, 27-21.

Prairie View got on the board first as quarterback Trazon Connley connected with wide receiver Shemar Savage for a 60-yard touchdown to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead with 8:53 left in the first quarter.

Southern was able to tie up the score at 7 with 52 seconds remaining in the first quarter as running back Kendric Rhymes scored on a seven-yard rushing touchdown. The Panthers re-took the lead with 7:46 left in the second quarter as kicker Carlos Villagomez made a 23-yard field goal to put the score at 10-7.

The back-and-forth battle continued as the Jaguars took their first lead of the game after running back Kobe Dillon scored on a four-yard rushing touchdown. Southern took a 14-10 lead with 5:34 remaining in the second quarter.

Prairie View was able to strike back as running back Jahquan Bloomfield scored on a 19-yard touchdown as the Panthers took a 17-14 lead with 3:21 to go in the second quarter.

Just before the half, quarterback Harold Blood found wide receiver August Pitre III for an eight-yard touchdown. Southern was able to take a 21-17 lead going into the half against Prairie View.

The Panthers re-took the lead with 3:04 left in the third quarter as running back Jamarious Brooks scored on a nine-yard rushing touchdown to put the score at 24-21. Prairie View added to their lead with a 40-yard field goal from Efren Jasso. The Panthers took a 27-21 lead with 6:55 to play.

With the loss, Southern falls to 5-5 overall on the season and 4-3 in conference play.

Southern will be off next week but will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 1 p.m. for the 50th annual Bayou Classic against Grambling.
