Standout Students

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Glasgow Middle School 8th grader Grace Ding got the shock of her life when she found out she was East Baton Rouge Parish’s student of the year.

“When I got student of the year, my heart literally dropped,” said Ding.

Ding was already receiving other accolades before the big one and detailed the process of getting through the nomination.

“I was nominated for the school’s student of the year, so I had to do a portfolio and an interview. After that, you go to the district and they choose the finalist and a final finalist out of those three,” she said.

She said her favorite subject is science and learning how the world works. She also has some big plans for her future.

“I want to be an astrobiologist and I hope I can find life somewhere not on earth. I think that’s really cool to think about,” she said.

Her cool plans include her dream college that she hopes to go to one day.

“I kind of want to go to MIT for science. I think it’s a really good college. I’ve gone on their website and I think it’s the perfect college for me,” said Ding.

With her heart set on her future, she hopes to make it all happen and inspire others her age to do the same.

“I think working hard is really important to work hard, but it’s also important to have determination and passion when you’re doing anything, even doing homework.”
