BATON ROUGE, La. (NBC Local 33) (FOX 44) — The Baton Rouge Mayor’s Office is teaming up with the East Baton Rouge Police Department and local organizations to provide free gun locks as a part of Project ChildSafe, an initiative aimed at keeping children safe from gun violence.

Mayor-President Sharon Weston-Broome made the announcement today alongside Chief Murphy Paul. Project ChildSafe Baton Rouge is in partnership with the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and will be a year-long effort to help prevent firearm accidents, thefts and misuse. Officials agreed the best way to secure the weapons is to place them in a safe with gun locks.

“If people are more conscious of safely securing their firearms when they’re not in use, then accidents and the misuse of firearms will go down,” Chief Murphy Paul said.

The locks will be available Monday through Friday at BRPD headquarters.
