Rep. Clay Higgins on Capitol chaos: ‘This must end now. This is not American’

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WDSU) — Rep. Clay Higgins is asking protesters to stand down after chaos erupted at the Capitol Wednesday in Washington, D.C.

A large group of protesters gathered outside of Senate chambers Wednesday afternoon, breaching barricades at the Capitol building and outside Senate chambers in Washington, according to multiple reports.

House and Senate debates about Electoral College objections have been placed on recess.

Higgins called the breach of security unacceptable.

“Violence and lawlessness are unacceptable. This must end now. This is not American,” Higgins said on Twitter.

Sen. Bill Cassidy also tweeted a video while walking through the halls of the Capitol after the recess, seconding that the act was not American.

Republican House Whip Steve Scalise also requested that protesters act peacefully, citing that Capitol security saved his life when he was shot during a congressional baseball game practice in 2017.
