BATON ROUGE, LA (LOCAL33) (FOX44) – Diabetes Alert Day is right around the corner, and even though you can’t workout at your local gym right now, the YMCA wants you to know your numbers.
Diabetes Alert Day is the fourth Tuesday in March. YMCA Personal Trainer Meredith Atterbery said it’s a great time to check in with your doctor.
“Diabetes is something that affects 30.3 million Americans, so even one in four Americans that have diabetes don’t even know that they have it. So talk to your doctor, know your risk factors and if you’re at risk it tested,” said Atterbery.
If you are at risk, there are some simple changes you can make to better your health.
“Stop using tobacco products, stop smoking, be more active, get or maintain a healthy weight, start eating a little better and making good nutrition choices.”
If you do get diagnosed with diabetes Atterbery said stay positive.
“It’s not a death sentence. It’s something that yes, you are going to have an additional medication, a different protocol per your doctor. Follow those guidelines and chances are it is going to become better nutrition choices and still that higher activity level.”
Atterbery said to listen to your doctor and make the necessary changes .
“Listen to your doctor, take the medications that you’re prescribed and other than that be more active.”
This year Diabetes Alert Day is on March 24.
