BATON ROUGE, LA (BRPROUD) – Mark your calendars, the YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day is just a few weeks away.
Each year the YMCA hosts Healthy Kids Day. It is a nationwide event, and participating brances host it on the same day at the same time.
“In the capital area, we have six locations participating. It’s going to be on April, 18 from 9:00 a.m. to noon,” said YMCA Personal Trainer Meredith Atterbery.
So what is Healthy Kids Day? Atterbery said it’s basically a health festival for kids.”
Imagine a giant health fair full of fun and activities just for kids.”
Atterbery said the sooner kids are exposed to health and wellness, the better off they’ll be later in life.
“We focus on a lot of health after we become adults because we start to be conscious of it and mindful of it, but we find that as kids who develop healthy habits at a younger age tend to have a lot better health long-term.”
During the event kids get the chance to try new healthy foods.
“Last year we had bananas, oranges, strawberries and fun things for the kids to taste and parents had no idea that their kids even liked oranges. Even if they had never had them before the kids tasted the oranges and they just couldn’t get away from the orange table. So it’s really need to give them exposure to things like that.”
Atterbery also said kids can learn about kid friendly programs at the YMCA.
“They can learn a lot about the activities the Y has to offer, the different kid programs and youth activity programs that we have. They also will get to see the city community partners that we have with activities for kids and healthy eating.”
Atterbery said it’s a great day for the entire family.
“Health is fun you know? Health is fun for kids and it’s also fun for adults. When you see your kid having fun being active, adults are going to be a lot more inclined to take their kid outside to do the activity with them.”
