Workout Wednesday: SMART goals for the New Year

BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) (LOCAL33) – New Years Day typically comes with new resolutions.

“It’s a new year, it’s a new start, just go for it. The time is now. Don’t wait until tomorrow because tomorrow never comes. So do it now,” said YMCA Personal Trainer Meredith Atterbery.

Atterbery said there are simple tips to make those new goals a reality.

“When we talk about goal setting, we talk about setting “SMART” goals. So you want it to be simple, measurable, attainable, realistic and on a timeline.”

Start small and keep track of your progress.

“If goals are too complicated you start to get lost in all the details and trying to figure out what to do. Keep it simple. Sometimes a goal may be just to show up 3 days this week. If we can’t measure it, we can’t actually reach it.”

Pick a goal that you can actually meet.

“Attainable is similar to realistic you just want it to be something that you can actually achieve. If you set this huge goal that’s completely unrealistic you may not reach it and get discouraged and end up right back where you started.”

Set an end date to keep you on track.

“You want to set a timeline. If your goal is just indefinite you tend to take a little more slowly than you normally would if you know that there’s a timeline and a finish line. “

Atterbery said the YMCA is there to help you every step of the way.
