Today: A strong ridge of high pressure is set up across our region leading to sunnier and drier conditions today with hotter temperatures. A HEAT ADVISORY has been issued for most of our parishes and counties today from 9AM to 7PM with heat indices expected to reach up to 110 degrees, maybe even 112 degrees in a few spots. Heat illnesses will be possible with this kind of heat and high humidity. The actual temperature today could reach 97 today in Baton Rouge. Isolated storms will be possible in the afternoon due to strong daytime heating and available moisture. Despite a small chance of storms, the forecast will remain mostly sunny and dry today.
Weekend: The heat will continue and even increase as we go into the weekend with highs as high as 98 or 99 degrees. An EXCESSIVE HEAT WATCH has been issued for parishes southeast of Baton Rouge, closer to Lake Pontchartrain for Saturday and Sunday. This could be expanded to include Baton Rouge and our other parishes, if the forecast warrants it. Heat indices will be between 108 and 115 degrees per the watch criteria. Rain chances will be possible but minimal with mostly sunny skies on Saturday and Sunday.
Next Week: The high pressure system will weaken, allowing for rain chances to return but the heat will still stay strong. Highs will be in the mid-90s with isolated to spotty showers on Monday and Tuesday then rain coverage becoing scattered Wednesday and Thursday.
Tracking the Tropics: Tropical Storm Grace make landfall in Mexico again late Friday before moving into the Eastern Pacific. A strong ridge of high pressure will prevent Grace from moving north.
Tropical Storm Henri is out in the Atlantic near Bermuda. It is expected to become a hurricane soon but will not impact us in Baton Rouge. The East coast is, however, keeping a close eye on it as it could impact New England on Sunday or Monday.
A tropical wave in the east Atlantic is tracking northwest with a 20% chance of development in the next 5 days.
