BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Four nursing home residents have died in Louisiana.
The Louisiana Department of Health is confirming “four deaths among nursing home residents evacuated to a facility on August 27 in Tangipahoa Parish ahead of Hurricane Ida.”
Nursing home residents were brought to the Waterbury Company’s warehouse from different parishes to evacuate from Hurricane Ida.
At least three of the deaths are related to Hurricane Ida, according to the coroner.
Upon hearing about deteriorating conditions at the warehouse after Hurricane Ida’s landfall, members of the Louisiana Department of Health went out to inspect promptly but were expelled from the property and prevented from conducting a full assessment on Tuesday.
There are 843 nursing home residents at the warehouse and LDH is working on moving them to safety.
LDH is providing a list of facilities that these residents are being moved to:
- River Palms Nursing and Rehab, Orleans Parish
- South Lafourche Nursing and Rehab, Lafourche Parish
- Maison Orleans Healthcare Center, Orleans Parish
- Park Place Healthcare Nursing Home, Jefferson Parish
- West Jefferson Health Care Center, Jefferson Parish
- Maison DeVille Nursing Home, Terrebonne Parish
- Maison DeVille Nursing Home of Harvey, Jefferson Parish
Around 9:45 a.m. on Thursday morning, LDH said 721 nursing home residents have been relocated and the others who are not in a hospital are awaiting a transfer.
LDH determined that 12 nursing home residents required a trip to the hospital.
According to the Louisiana Department of Health, “Unless under a mandatory evacuation order, nursing homes make the decision of when and where to evacuate. They must always provide safe conditions for their residents.”
An investigation into this nursing home facility is ongoing and the possibility remains that referrals will be made to law enforcement.
LDH plans on taking legal action against the nursing homes that are involved.
As of Thursday afternoon, nursing home patients are being relocated to the LSU field house.
This is a developing story.
