Damaging winds, tornadoes possible overnight into Saturday

Tonight – A band of strong to severe thunderstorms arrives after midnight [2:00 am – 8:00 am]. All types of severe weather are possible: damaging winds [70+ mph], large hail [1.00+”], heavy rain [2-3″], frequent lightning and isolated tornadoes [mainly EF-0 – EF-1]. Localized flash flooding could be an issue as storms converge over our area and balloon up. Rainfall rates could be quite intense. Have multiple ways to receive warnings since the timing is terrible. Charge your cell phone. To hear alerts, make sure the volume is all the way up before heading to bed. Have a game plan in case of emergency. Lows near 67.

Tomorrow – Storms will exit by mid-morning. Some spotty rain will be possible through early afternoon. Clouds will clear by late day. Highs near 81.

The primary threat will be damaging winds, which could exceed 60-70 mph. Tornadoes, flooding and large hail are possible, as well. Rain totals through Sunday morning look to be 1-3″ with locally higher amounts exceeding 3″.

The timing for these threats is from late Friday night through early Saturday morning for the Baton Rouge metro, so it is important to stay weather aware. The threat for heavy rain and severe storms may continue into the late morning. Check back in with us frequently as we fine-tune the forecast. Alerts could be issued while you are sleeping, so you should have multiple ways of receiving warnings in case one method does not work.
