FORT COLLINS, Colo. (BRPROUD) – Dr. Philip Klotzbach and his team from Colorado State University are predicting an active Atlantic hurricane season once again.
Colorado State experts are predicting 17 named storms, 8 hurricanes, and 4 major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher). These projections are due to warmer than average water temperatures. Also, due to the likely lack of El Niño during the summer and fall. El Niño increases vertical wind shear – Wind shear rips tropical systems apart.
An average season (from 1991-2020) would consist of 14 total named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes.
Last year, there were a total of 30 total named storms, 13 hurricanes, and 6 major hurricanes.
Remember, all it takes is one!
The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on June 1st.
